God Will Judge With Equity

Before reading chapter 75, it helps to know that most interpreters agree that this psalm aligns with the point in time where David was crowned king after Saul's death. So perhaps, Asaph penned it for him or David penned it then gave it to Asaph.

The chapter flows as follows:
v1: David thanks and gives credit to God for all he has done.
v2-5: David speaks out how he intends to lead for the good of the people, under God.
V6-7: From God alone, kings receive their power. Only God is judge.
V8: From God, all receive their doom.
V9-10: David declares praise and attributes to God what is His.

Psalm 75
God will Judge with Equity
To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy.  A psalm of Asaph. A song.

1 We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.

2 “At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity.
3 When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants,
it is I who keep steady its pillars.
4 I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
5 do not lift up your horn on high,
or speak with haughty neck.’”

6 For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
7 but it is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.
8 For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup
with foaming wine, well mixed,
and he pours out from it,
and all the wicked of the earth
shall drain it down to the dregs.

9 But I will declare it forever;
I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
10 All the horns of the wicked I will cut off,
but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

This is definitely a chapter for the brain first, then for the heart. Hope the above explanations were helpful.

Honestly, this isn't my kind of devotion because I like heart stuff. However, I do love that we are a verse by verse kind of church. Therefore, I felt called to make this psalm come alive by referencing its context.

Now for the hearts: reread about God's judgment, power, and wrath from 6-8. Imagine the red wine as blood and draining and foaming and all that stuff!

Point #1: God will judge with Equity!

For those who kill or slander, he will judge.
For those who enslave, beat or abuse, he will judge.
For those who continually betray us, he will judge.
For those who ache, God hears their cry!
Where there is evil, God will judge with Equity.

Point #2: But that includes our own hearts too.
God will also judge us with equity.  And I know there is sin in my heart. These verses remind us that we are in need of a Savior to save us from ourselves.

In 2017, our society gravitates towards tv shows or movies where the hero crushes the enemy.

But we, as Christians, get to live knowing that Christ already crushed Satan by way of the cross!!  He freed an enslaved humanity and reconciled them to God through his righteousness.

So wherever your hearts went as you read, I want you to bring it back to the Gospel. Remember, every book of the Bible whispers the name of Jesus.

Point #3: My specific prayer today is that, in knowing our hero/King/God will judge with equity and has already reigned as victor, that you can examine your heart and forgive those who have wronged you!

I need to do this too.  God bears the burden of judging others so we don't have to.

May you feel the freedom of forgiveness and may I be able to do the same.

In love and truth,
Grace
