Our Days Are Numbered
“So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”
Psalms 90:12-17 ESV
Do you even think about the fact that your days are numbered? 20 yrs ago my dad admitted himself in to the hospital and said he wasn’t leaving until they could tell him why he wasn’t feeling good...3 days later on Wednesday he was told on that he had inoperable terminal stomach cancer. When the oncologist visited him that day and gave him his options for treatments that may or may not extend his life, he simply replied that only God knows how long he would live. 3 days later on Saturday, in a phone call with my dad I asked him how he had slept that night...he replied that it was a restless night because he’d been taking with Jesus. I asked him what his conversation was like and he told me Jesus told him it was time to go home. I asked him what he thought that meant and he wasn’t exactly sure but he knew his days were numbered.
I encouraged him to make the most of everyday and if he wanted to check himself out of the hospital and go home, he should just do it. So he did. That Saturday night, all the family members that lived close by came to their house to visit him. The ones who couldn’t visit him called him on the phone. As the night went on he got tired and said good night, excused himself and went to bed. We all went home, prayerfully asking God how my mom was going to be able to care for him as he fought this battle. God spoke and our prayers were answered...we got woke up around 5:00 am by a phone call telling us that the number of days my dad had were up. He died in his sleep and Jesus took him home. Sure didn’t see that coming!!!
Our days are numbered and no one knows what they are. How many of us went to bed last night assuming we would wake up this morning and get our days started like all our other days. Today wasn’t guaranteed to anyone, nor is tomorrow.
Today as we ponder that thought, I pray that we all make the most of the day God has given us. We are all here for a reason and I pray that we don’t miss out on what Jesus is saying to us.
Be bold and be a blessing to someone today!
