- Matthew 1:3-6

Our daughter Phoebe is so unexpected. She was unexpected before she was born. Her personality as a baby and toddler was unexpected, and her personality as a little girl has certainly been unexpected thus far. She absolutely blows my mind to be honest.

We thought she would be such a girly girl, then she turned out nothing like that as a toddler and was much more rough and tumble. But now she's a girly girl with a bit of attitude. One thing that's always been the same is that everything happens on her terms.

You want a hug? Maybe when she's ready. You want her to sing a song? If it's her idea and she's feeling it, she might appease you. She is as unexpected as I could imagine. And I love it.

This passage has 4 people in the genealogy of Jesus that were certainly unexpected. In those days, they wouldn't have appeared in a genealogy. Why? Because they were women. That is unexpected.

In vs. 3-6, we see Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba (wife of Uriah) mentioned. 4 women. 4 troublesome reputations. 4 Gentiles. That is unexpected.

Matthew is writing this Gospel primarily for the Jewish reader to see that Jesus is the Messiah, why would all of these women be listed in his genealogy? Why not just stick with the men? Wouldn't that keep with the times and avoid any controversy?

Jesus is the master and perfecter of unexpected. In this genealogy, there is importance given to the role of the female, where there was none given by any of the contemporary writings or religions. There is a sense of redemption for these women with reputations that preceded them. And there is a bigger issue being addressed of the inclusion of Gentiles into God's Kingdom.

So unexpected.

It's amazing really that we can see how incredible God is in these 4 seemingly obscure verses. God has plans in place and a purpose for your life that is beyond what your mind can expect. It's beyond what you would plan. It's so much better.

Church, pray today that you notice the unexpected things that God does. Pray that you are aware enough to join Him in the plan to show the world the beauty of His unexpected plan. I'm praying that our unexpected Jesus blows your mind with His grace and love today.
