Cosmic Significance

1 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
6 You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet,
7 all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
- Psalms 8

This is potentially the easiest Devo I've ever written. For most of my life, I've loved astronomy. You could say that I'm astronomically infatuated. I mean, don't forget, being an astronaut was my backup plan for a job.

One of the most humbling, beautiful truths is that God created everything, sustains everything, and yet loves us above all. That's precisely what this Psalm is getting at. I mean, is there anything that makes your heart leap than that truth?!

Think of this. You look up at the stars at night, and see a tiny speck of what God has placed in the cosmos, and think of your cosmic insignificance. I mean really, how insignificant are we? God has all the heavens and earth to worry about...what is man that God is mindful of him?

But the reality is that He is so mindful of us. He listens to our littlest prayers. He knows when we are weak. He provides for our most basic needs. He loves you. Think about that. Out of all He has made, He loves you. He calls you loved. He calls you affirmed. He calls you accepted. Through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, He calls you son. He calls you daughter. He gives you cosmic significance.

Worship God today! Praise Him! When you pray, make them prayers of praise! Sing to Him! Listen to worship music on your drive and sing out loud! The creator of everything made it all, and yet loves you! How majestic is His name in all the Earth!

Love you, Church!
