The Faithful have Vanished
Save, O Lord, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
Psalms 12:1-2
How many times do we say something to someone that really wasn’t totally true? It might not be all the time but I know I am not completely guiltless when it comes to telling a lie or embellishing a story a bit. Our study Bible has this to say about verses one and two
“ As usual in lament, the psalm describes the situation: the particular kind of lie are flattering lips and insincere speech (a double heart), both of which manipulate others for the sake of gain. In such an environment the godly and the faithful become so rare that it seems as if they have disappeared, either because they have been suppressed or because they have been seduced into lying themselves.”
Telling fibs or stretching the truth has slowly become apart of our culture; we often say things without even knowing we are saying them. We over exaggerate the truth to get a reaction or gain something from others. I think it is easy to be seduced into lying/exaggerating a story a little bit, but as ones who are Christ followers we are called to be different. We are called to stand out and to be known as people who speak light and truth. We are called to be like Christ in the things we say and do. We are to be a reflection of his word and his words are pure.
The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times.
Psalm 12:6
Going forward in this week I would encourage you to be in prayer that the Holy Spirit will guard your tongue and your lips that we may not be seduced into the ways of the world. That we would be a generation that speaks truth that reflects the words of the Lord and not a generation thatvanishes.
